  • We made general revisions for clarity around how we do and do not use the information that we collect from you. (Sections 6, 9, 12)
  • We added a California Privacy Statement. (Section 18)

We've Updated Our Legal Policies

We're writing to let you know that we've made a few changes to MailChimp's Terms of Use, Privacy Policy, and Acceptable Use Policy. Here's an overview of the changes:

We've updated our Terms of Use to improve the billing process for add-ons. We've also made some changes to our sections about compliance to make it clear that you will use MailChimp only in compliance with your applicable laws, which may be different or more restrictive than the laws of the United States, and that you won't use our platform to discriminate in any way.

We've added clearer disclosures about how we collect and treat data related to subscribers in our Privacy Policy. We've also made some updates to accommodate our growing international user base: We made it clear that we operate and store data in the United States, added a separate section for our Australian users, and clarified that we transfer data from the EU under our Data Processing Agreement, which incorporates Standard Contractual Clauses. It's important that every individual whose data we hold knows how to correct, update, or remove the information we have, so we've explained how to contact us and how we treat those inquiries.

In our Acceptable Use Policy, we've updated our prohibited actions section to address some actions that have harmed our system recently. We've broken out our guidelines to clearly distinguish between content that's never allowed to be sent through MailChimp (like illegal activity) and content we allow, but may take a harder look at (like online trading).

Why we're making these changes

MailChimp has grown significantly since our legal policies were last revised about three years ago. We've made some functional changes since then, like offering more features as add ons, and our legal agreements need to be updated accordingly. There are also some restrictions in our Terms that are no longer relevant or accurate, since email and marketing best practices have changed over the years. Finally, some countries have enacted or updated their laws related to data privacy, so to better accommodate the needs of our international users, particularly those located in the EU and Australia, you'll see we've added some sections to our Privacy Policy.

What you need to do

These new Terms go into effect today. If you continue using MailChimp after today, you'll be doing so under the new Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.

As always, you may toggle your privacy and publicity settings to adjust how your data is collected, used, and disclosed.

We're deeply committed to protecting MailChimp users and their subscribers' information, meeting a high standard of data privacy across the world, and being transparent about our actions and requirements. Please read through the policies, and if you have any questions or feedback about them, contact our legal team at legal@mailchimp.com.

Influence the Future of MailChimp

Last year, we made many improvements to MailChimp based in part on your responses to our annual survey. Want to influence what we work on in 2014?

Take The Survey
(We read every single response. Really.)

The Influence of Customer Feedback in 2013

In 2013, we traveled more than 50,000 miles to meet with customers, surveyed hundreds of thousands of users, read thousands of feedback emails, interviewed more than 200 people, and conducted dozens of usability tests—all to make a better MailChimp.

The lessons we learned led to some major improvements and lots of refinements, such as: We tackled a lot in 2013, but we've got even more in store this year. Thanks in advance for your time and feedback.

Tips for Holiday Emails: Design, Support, and Social Media

MailChimp

Seasonal volume is coming

It's that time of year. Questions to our support team pick up dramatically with seasonal volume. We want to keep response times low and meet all your expectations without interrupting your workflow. Our support team will be ready for the volume, and early preparation on your part will help us help you faster. Stay ahead this season, and use these tips to jumpstart your holiday campaigns.

Email design inspiration

Use our drag and drop editor to place words and photos exactly where you want them, then adjust and reorder with a click. These days, mobile devices account for nearly half of emails opened, so all of your templates come mobile-friendly—no special coding required. We've collected some beautiful emails from other MailChimp customers to help inspire you.

Grow your list with a tablet

Collect subscribers from a tablet and grow your audience with Chimpadeedoo, or add a signup form to your Facebook page or WordPress blog. If it's been a while since your last campaign, our knowledge base offers some best practices on how to keep readership high by targeting your most interested members.

Send a survey to learn more about your customers

We know from experience that a successful holiday is impossible without great customer service. If you're using Wufoo or SurveyMonkey, send out a survey to learn more about the people on your list. For an even quicker setup, include a few questions in a simple campaign, and ask your customers to respond. We'll filter the autoreplies, and display comments right inside your account. Use this feedback to guide your holiday communication, and you'll increase engagement and improve your deliverability.

Add content from social media automatically

MailChimp on Pinterest Pin it Pin it Pin it
When it's time to add content, try our integrations with Pinterest and Instagram to share your latest posts social media posts with your email audience. Share your campaign on Twitter to continue the conversation.
If you try something new and it works for you, we'd love to hear your story. As you prepare for the upcoming season, we'll be here to help along the way.

MailChimp v8.8: New Price Tiers Added

MailChimp
MailChimp v8.8 is now live across all accounts. We update our app every month, and this time around, you'll find a big change that has nothing to do with features.

New price tiers for growing companies

As Ben explained on our blog, we're adding 8,000 new users per day, and most of them are small, growing businesses. We remember what that's like, so we added more pricing tiers to encourage the growth of your list—and your business. To help make things smoother, we divided our plans into $5 increments, from $10 all the way up to $240.

Current prices will not increase for anybody, and some users might even see a decrease. We're also putting more resources into our self-help knowledge base, video tutorials, and Experts Directory, to empower you along the way.

More updates

IsoHunt lists many popular TV programmes and movies available to download illegally

IsoHunt, a popular website offering BitTorrents of mostly pirated material, is to shut down following a court settlement.
The site's owner, Canadian Gary Fung, has agreed to pay $110m (£68m) to the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).
MPAA chairman Chris Dodd said the move was a "major step forward" for legitimate commerce online.
In a blog post, Mr Fung said: "It's sad to see my baby go."
The site is currently still online, but will soon be shut. It is one of the most popular sites of its kind on the internet.
A group of companies, including Disney, Paramount and Twentieth Century Fox, accused the site of wilfully infringing copyright by listing millions of popular movies and TV programmes - in a court battle [...]

The researchers were able to spoof the route of boats

A system used globally to track marine activity is highly vulnerable to hacking, security experts have warned.
Weaknesses in outdated systems could allow attackers to make ships disappear from tracking systems - or even make it look like a large fleet was incoming.
Researchers at Trend Micro said their findings showed the danger of using legacy systems designed when security was not an issue.
But one vessel-tracking specialist said spoof attempts could be easily spotted.
Lloyd's List Intelligence's Ian Trowbridge said that in addition to the vulnerable technology - known as the Automatic Identification System (AIS) - other measures could be used to identify marine activity.
"The spoofing would immediately be identified by [Lloyd's List Intelligence] [...]

If "li-fi" technology takes off, all LED lights could potentially provide internet connectivity

Wi-fi connectivity from a light bulb - or "li-fi" - has come a step closer, according to Chinese scientists.
A microchipped bulb can produce data speeds of up to 150 megabits per second (Mbps), Chi Nan, IT professor at Shanghai's Fudan University told Xinhua News.
A one-watt LED light bulb would be enough to provide net connectivity to four computers, researchers say.
But experts told the BBC more evidence was needed to back up the claims.
There are no supporting video or photos showing the technology in action.
Li-fi, also known as visible light communications (VLC), at these speeds would be faster - and cheaper - than the average Chinese broadband connection.
In 2011, Prof Harald Haas, an expert in optical wireless communications at the University [...]

One puzzle in Obduction involves finding out how this abandoned farmhouse was moved to an alien planet

The creators of legendary adventure game Myst are seeking cash for a new game via Kickstarter.
Cyan Worlds is looking for $1.1m (£679,000) from the crowdfunding site to develop a game called Obduction.
The game-maker said its new title would be a spiritual successor to its earlier point-and-click adventure games Myst and Riven.
If Cyan reaches its funding target it plans to release PC and Mac versions of Obduction in mid-2015.
Hand waving
Released in 1993, Myst was a huge hit thanks to its sumptuous look, detailed world-building and intricate puzzles.
On its Kickstarter page, Cyan said Obduction would continue with these traditions but update them to take advantage of the power of modern computers.
It said the game would use the Unreal 4 game [...]
