One of the suspects in the Woolwich murder was arrested in Kenya in 2010, the UK Foreign Office has confirmed.
It said Michael Adebolajo was arrested there and it gave consular assistance "as normal" in the circumstances.
Media reports have suggested that Mr Adebolajo appeared in court accused of leading a group of Islamists trying to join terrorist group al-Shabaab in neighbouring Somalia.
The Kenyan government had denied that he had ever visited the country.
Mr Adebolajo, 28, and a second man, Michael Adebowale, 22, were arrested on suspicion of the murder of soldier Lee Rigby in Woolwich on Wednesday.

Two women, aged 27 and 28 years, from Clubmoor, have been arrested on suspicion of an offence under the 1991 Dangerous Dogs Act.
A post-mortem examination on the man is due to take place later.

It fought for control of vital supply routes, beginning as war broke out in 1939.
Liverpool was the destination of many wartime Atlantic convoys and home of the Western Approaches Command.
The climax of the battle was in May 1943, when Germany's submarine fleet suffered heavy losses in the Atlantic.
